She was born in Marinha Grande.
She holds a degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of the Algarve, a Master's degree in Applied Ecology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and a PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of the Azores.
She is a biologist and trainer accredited by the Regional Directorate for Labour, Vocational Training and Consumer Protection of the Regional Government of the Azores (National Professional Certification System); trainer accredited by the Scientific-Educational Council for OnToing raining, Ministry of Education; associate curator at the Funchal Natural History Museum; and integrated doctoral member of MARE - Centre for Marine and Environmental Sciences. She has participated in several oceanographic expeditions (Bay of Biscay, Irish coast, Azores, Madeira, etc.) focused on the exploration and mapping of extreme marine environments with underwater robotic systems. She has dived several times in manned submarines and was twice head of mission on scientific expeditions to explore deep-sea habitats on the island of Madeira. She has also participated in monitoring campaigns and experimental fishing using bottom trawling (NI Norway - IPMA).
1999 - 2023 -> Scientific research and consultancy in the area of Fisheries (including the National Biological Sampling Plan known as PNAB - DCF, EU Data Collection Framework, technical decision support for the implementation of legislation to regulate traditional fisheries, recreational fishing, Aquaculture, Biology, Ecology and Ocean Governance in Research Institutes, Associated Laboratories, Natural History Museums, and Universities, both national and international (IPMA - Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere; University of Plymouth, UK; CIIMAR - Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research, University of Porto; UAc - University of the Azores; IFREMER - French Research Institute for Exploration of the Sea, Brest, France; OOM - Madeira Ocean Observatory/ARDITI; and Rebikoff-Niggeler Foundation, etc.).
December 2018 to the present - PhD senior technician at the Regional Directorate for Fisheries.
At the time of her appointment, she chaired the ICES WGIAZOR working group of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) dedicated to the integrated assessment of the ecosystems of the Azores (appointment for the 2023-2025 triennium) with contributions to the "Fisheries Overview" and "Ecosystem Overview" of the ICES ecoregion that includes the Azores; Member of the ICES/NAFO WGDEC "Deep-water Ecology" working group; and Member of the Regional Scientific Research Committee for the Challenger 150 programme under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). She was also a member of the Scientific Committee of the DEEP-ML project, comprising five experts from different areas, an initiative promoted by the Regional Government of Madeira and co-financed by the MAR 2020 operational programme (EMFAF).
