Symposium of European regions linked to space technologies takes place in Ponta Delgada on Thursday and Friday
The Azores will host the fourth edition of the European Symposium of NEREUS (Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies). It will be an opportunity for promoting fruitful and inspiring discussions with a view to boosting a stronger and more resilient European space sector. The event will take place at the Teatro Micaelense in Ponta Delgada on Thursday and Friday, featuring presentations by many experts on the subject. "New Space for Multiple Challenges: Resilience & Sustainability" will be the theme of this symposium. As a founding member of NEREUS and an active player on its board of directors, the Azores reiterate their commitment to the network's mission: promoting the use of space technologies to serve European regions, encouraging innovation, sustainability, and interregional cooperation. The event will bring together 15 NEREUS member regions in São Miguel, strengthening their role as agents of change, promoting innovative solutions based on space data and technologies. The event will be opened by Thierry Cotelle, President of NEREUS, David Pérez-Dionis Chinea, representative of the Canary Islands Government, and Berta Cabral, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures of the Regional Government of the Azores. Running from today until October 7, the photography exhibition "Ao Longo da Corrente" will be open to the public at Praça de Gonçalo Velho and Teatro Micaelense. It takes visitors on a journey along the Gulf Stream from the Azores to Svalbard, exploring how Europeans are changing, adapting and tackling the climate crisis. Produced by the communication project of the R!SE organisation and the European Space Agency (ESA), the exhibition combines the "macro" image captured by satellite photos with the community and individual stories depicted in photographs and videos produced throughout the journey. It should be noted that the Azorean Government is determined to consolidate the Region's role as an Atlantic hub for the space sector, contributing to a more resilient, sustainable and innovative Europe. The unique geographical location and exceptional natural conditions endow the Region with several advantages in various areas of space activities, such as satellite monitoring, Earth observation and access to space. NEREUS aims to achieve, among other things, goals such as involvement in European Union programmes with a view to responding to the needs of technology end users, increasing citizen participation in European space policy, and harnessing the potential for using space technologies to sustain economic growth in the regions. All information on the symposium can be found on the following website: Space Azores 4th EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM BY NEREUS REGIONS - Space Azores.
