Code of Conduct for Diving with Pelagic Sharks and Jamantas in the Azores

This code of conduct is intended to define a set of rules to be adopted voluntarily by maritime-tourist operators that offer experienced tourists the opportunity to dive with pelagic sharks and jamantas in the Azores. The code focuses on the interaction between divers and animals and aims to promote the safety of divers and animal welfare, giving sustainability and quality to the activity.

The rules are the result of concerted action between maritime tourism operators and other stakeholders such as researchers and non-governmental organisations. The process was mediated by the Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs, the Secretariat of the Sea, Science and Technology. It is expected that after an implementation phase, which will allow assessing its suitability and a possible revision, this code will be an integral part of a law that will regulate this maritime-tourism activity.

The signatories freely associate themselves with this code of conduct for diving with pelagic sharks and jamantas in the Azores, committing themselves to adopt sustainable practices defined therein.
The code of conduct is presented to customers, who respect, adopt and subscribe to it.
