Regional Secretariat for the Sea and Fisheries
The organisational structure of the XIII Regional Government of the Azores, approved by the Regional Implementing Decree no. 28/2020/A of December 10, 2020, reflects the decisions taken for the governance of the Azores, namely the strategic guidelines based on the public policies pursued by the XIII Regional Government.
It defines the competences of the departments of the XIII Regional Government of the Azores, with particular reference to Article 13, which defines the competences of the Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries:
Article 13
Competences of the Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries
The Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries is responsible for the following areas:
a) Oceanography, fisheries and aquaculture;
b) Development and preservation of the marine environment;
c) Maritime spatial planning up to 200 nautical miles;
d) Management of marine protected areas;
e) Integrated planning and co-management, with the State, of the marine space beyond 200 nautical miles;
f) Coastal planning and management;
g) Cooperation with the Maritime Authority;
h) Collaboration with marine scientific research;
i) Fisheries inspection.
Furthermore, the Regional Implementing Decree no. 28/2020/A of December 10, 2020, stipulates that the Regional Secretariat for the Sea and Fisheries shall be headquartered in the city of Horta.
