Mário Rui Rilhó de Pinho Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries
Biographical Note

Born in Benguela, Angola, on December 11, 1959.

He holds a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of Algarve and a PhD in Marine Sciences from the same institution. 

He taught at Quarteira School of Maritime Technologies (1990). He was a Consultant for the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation - NORAD, at the Fisheries Research Institute of Mozambique (1991), and a Research Trainee and Research Assistant at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries - University of the Azores (1993-2003).

He was a member of the Installing Committee of the School of Technologies of the University of the Azores (2017), President of the Institute of Marine Research - IMAR (2018-2021), President of the Azores Fisheries Observer Programme - POPA (2018-2021) and Coordinator of the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (2019-2022). He served as Regional Director for Maritime Policies of the XIII Government of the Azores (2022-2024).

Since 1998, he has been a lecturer for the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences degree programmes as well as for the Master's programme in Integrated Ocean Studies and Erasmus Mundus Master's programme in Maritime Spatial Planning at the University of the Azores. Since 2003, he has held the position of Assistant Researcher at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the same higher education institution.  Since 2019, he has been a member of the Commission on Teaching, a member of the General Assembly and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies of the University of the Azores.

Since March 4, 2024, he has been the Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries of the XIV Government of the Azores.
