Code of Conduct for Pelagic and Jamantas Mergulho in the Azores
This code of conduct is intended to define a set of rules to be adopted on a voluntary basis by the sea-tourist operators offering experienced tourists the opportunity to practise diving with pelagic sharks and jamanders in the Azores. The Code focuses on the interaction between dives and animals and aims to promote diver safety and animal welfare by giving sustainability and quality to the activity.
The rules are the result of consultation between maritime tour operators and other stakeholders such as researchers and non-governmental organisations. The case was mediated by the Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Maritime Affairs, the Secretariat for the Sea, Science and Technology. It is expected that after an implementation phase, which will make it possible to assess its suitability and a possible revision, this code will be an integral part of a law regulating this tourist activity.
The signatories freely associate themselves with this code of conduct for diving with pelagic sharks and jamantas in the Azores and commit to sustainable practices defined therein.
The code of conduct is presented to customers who comply with it, adopt and subscribe to it.
