Portuguese as a Host Language (PLA) Courses are intended for foreign citizens aged 18 or over who hold a valid residence permit in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and whose native language is not Portuguese.
Promoted by the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Communities and the Regional Directorate for Education and Educational Administration, these courses are regulated by Portaria n.º 24/2026 de 6 de março de 2026.
The aim is to support social and professional integration by promoting proficiency in the Portuguese language and facilitating access to the labour market, public services, education, and civic participation.
The certification obtained may also be used in applications for Portuguese nationality, permanent residence, and long-term resident status.
The courses may take place during working hours or after working hours and may be promoted by public, private, or cooperative entities, including municipalities, associations, companies, trade unions, and public educational institutions.
Applications open until 31 March.
