Welcome Note

When we think of the Environment, we enter a complex space of a technical and legal nature, but fundamental in the structure of civilizations. Effectively, we can measure the level of development of a society through the sensitivity of citizens to environmental issues.

Today, and particularly in Europe, we are witnessing the involvement of civil society in everything that has to do with sustainable development and participatory citizenship, pushing governments to higher levels of demand.

In this context, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change was created, a department that exercises competences in the areas of the environment, climate change, sustainable development, territorial valorization and planning, cartography, cadastre, geographic information, water resources, natural and landscape heritage, biodiversity, waste prevention and management, as well as environmental surveillance, supervision and inspection.

Thus, the environmental inspection and supervision service is the responsibility of the Regional Environmental Inspectorate (IRA), and our strategic vision is to ensure compliance with legality in the areas of environmental quality, waste management, nature conservation and biodiversity, water resources, spatial planning and urbanism.

In the particular case of Portugal, inserted in the European Union, the legal regime for environmental matters is especially dense, as international protocols and agreements, European regulations and legislation and national and regional legislation converge.

"Regional Environmental Inspectorate, a future with confidence!"

In the development of their activities, it is intended that IRA inspectors have at their disposal a set of more modern conditions, both material and technical, in order to guarantee the continuous improvement of their work.

In parallel, the IRA also carries out the functions of investigating and deciding on administrative offenses when illegal practices are at stake, which are verified, either by its inspectors or by other authorities, administrative or police, and in which the legislation provides for this competence to the IRA.

We also bet on the valorization of human resources through continuous training and participation in thematic forums, with a view to permanently updating the knowledge of all elements of the IRA.

It is this integrated vision that we have, so that together we can contribute to a true Sustainable Development.

The Regional Environment Inspector,
Anselmo F. Falcão
