In accordance with Article 16 of the Regional Implementing Decree no. 9/2016/A of November 21, approving the Organisational Structure of the XII Regional Government of the Azores, the Regional Directorate for the Environment, headquartered on the island of Faial, is under the administration of the Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism.
Under the terms of paragraph 2 of Article 17 of the Regional Implementing Decree no. 9/2016/A of November 21, the Regional Directorate for the Environment has maintained the same legal status and organisational structure as provided for in the Regional Implementing Decree no.11/2013/A of August 2. Furthermore, under the terms of Article 18 of the said legislation, this entity has integrated the Directorate for Cartography and Geographic Information Services.
Accordingly, under the terms of Article 34 of the Regional Implementing Decree no. 11/2013/A of August 2, the Regional Directorate for the Environment has as its mission to contribute to the definition of regional policies in the areas of the environment, spatial planning and water resources as well as to guide, coordinate and control their implementation. In compliance with the provisions of Article 39 of the Regional Implementing Decree no.4/2011/A of January 31, establishing the powers of the Directorate of Cartography and Geographic Information Services, the Regional Directorate for the Environment also has the responsibility of coordinating and developing actions leading to the implementation of regional policies in the provision of geographic, cartographic and land registry information.
