Biographical Note

Alexandra de Carvalho dos Santos Garcia Guerreiro graduated in Marine Biology and Fisheries at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and the Environment of the University of Algarve (Faro, Portugal). She holds a Master's degree in "Ecology, Management and Modelling of Aquatic Resources" from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University of Lisbon - Costa da Caparica, Portugal) and a Doctorate degree in "Ecology, Management and Modelling of Marine Resources" from the Department of Ecology and Sustainable Economic Development of the University of Tuscia (Viterbo, Italy).

She has conducted studies on the characterisation of parasitic fauna and its use as biological markers at the Università degli Studi di Roma, La Sapienza (Rome, Italy) and on age and growth at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (Crete, Greece).

May to October 1998 - Trainee at the Regional Directorate for the Environment of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo (Lisbon and Tagus Valley), West Operational Centre (Caldas da Rainha, Portugal), where she worked as a senior technician.

November 1998 to March 2011 - Research fellow of the "National Fisheries Data Collection Plan" (PNRD) at the Portuguese Institute for Sea and the Atmosphere - IPMA (Algés and Olhão, Portugal). She took part in different research projects in the fields of fisheries technology, socio-economic assessment of fishing communities and the assessment and classification of the conservation status of large pelagic species.

April 2011 to December 2013 and April 2014 to June 2015 - Senior technician at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta, Portugal), where she conducted and coordinated studies on the age and growth of demersal species caught in the Region.

February to March 2014 -Senior technician working on a service provision basis at the Regional Secretariat for the Sea, Science and Technology, Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs (Horta, Portugal), where she collaborated on the drafting of the initial assessment report of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for the subdivision of the Azores.

July 2015 to December 14, 2020 - Senior technician under a contract of indefinite duration at the Regional Secretariat for the Sea Science and Technology, Regional Directorate for Fisheries (Horta, Portugal). She was responsible for matters concerning the management of marine resources and the regional fishing fleet.

Over the years, she has published several articles with scientific refereeing, organised international conferences and workshops, participated in several international scientific forums with posters and presentations, and delivered various technical-scientific opinions.

She has also participated as an expert in several STECF (Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries) meetings as well as in ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) working groups and workshops, and in the Advisory Councils of Faial and Pico Natural Parks.

She has collaborated with ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) in reporting catch data for large pelagic specimens and proposing management units and their respective borders for Atlantic swordfish stocks.

She has been responsible for the planning, development and maintenance of several databases for data collection from different projects. Furthermore, she has participated in several research campaigns on board commercial purse seiners, trawlers and surface longline fishing vessels.
