Infrastructure Monitoring and Detection Station (IS42)

Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), capable of recording vibrations of a possible underground nuclear explosion in the sea and air, as well as the detection of radioactive waste released into the atmosphere. Monitoring stations transmit data via satellite to the International Data Centre (IDC) in Vienna, where they are used to detect, track and characterise events.

A partnership within a project between the Institute for Vulcanology and Risk Assessment (Ivar) and The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation.

17-02-2011 — PT signs a Facility Agreement with the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) to host infrastructure of the International Monitoring System (IMS) to monitor evidence of underground, ocean and atmospheric nuclear explosions. The signature of this agreement implies cooperation with the CTBTO in the establishment, testing, operation, modernisation and maintenance of IMS facilities, even before the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT — Portugal was the 59th State to ratify this treaty).

CTBTO infrastructure in Portugal:

  • Flores — Hydroacostic station;
  • Graciosa — Infrasound station;
  • Ponta Delgada — Radionuclides Station.
