The Regional Labour Inspectorate (IRT) is a public service, endowed with technical autonomy. Its activity is focused on the inspection of compliance with regulations concerning working conditions, according to the principles laid down in Conventions No. 81, 129 and 155 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
This entity has as its mission the improvement of working conditions through counselling and supervision of compliance with labour standards in the context of labour relations in companies, regardless of their legal form or nature.
Its actions encompass all sectors of activity as well as any places where there are labour relations or evidence of such relations.
The Regional Labour Inspectorate also monitors compliance with occupational safety and health legislation in public administration services.

Regional Labour Inspectorate provided more than 22 thousand information reports to workers and employers in 2024
During 2024, the Regional Labour Inspectorate (IRT), according to its activity report, carried out 3,378 inspection visits, opened 85 labour administrative offence proceedings and cleared outstanding claims against workers amounting to €742,442.00. In the same period, and as part of the fight against illegal, undeclared or concealed precarious work, the IRT detected 273 workers in irregular situations, with 265 in a situation of undeclared work and eight in "disguised self-employment" (a situation when an employer considers an individual as self-employed to hide their actual legal status as an employee). During that period, the situation of 242 workers was settled. The IRT provided 22,066 information reports to workers, employers and other organisations, including representative associations. In terms of asbestos removal, there were 28 asbestos removal authorisations, for a quantity of around 27,270.00 square metres, involving 132 workers. As far as prevention is concerned, the IRT carried out 44 audits on companies providing external occupational safety services and their client companies. Also in the area of prevention and the promotion of occupational safety and health, the IRT carried out 14 awareness-raising actions involving workers, employers, representative associations and schools, covering 17,398 recipients. The IRT is an inspection service under the administration of the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Housing and Employment, whose mission is to promote the improvement of working conditions by monitoring compliance with labour regulations and legislation on occupational health and safety.

Regional Labour Inspectorate holds seminar on "Working Safely and Healthily in the Digital Age"
The Regional Labour Inspectorate (IRT) will hold a seminar on ‘Working Safely and Healthily in the Digital Age’ on October 30 at Nonagon - São Miguel Science and Technology Park in Lagoa, as announced by the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Housing and Employment. This event is part of the European Week for Safety and Health at Work 2024. It is aimed at professionals from all sectors of activity as well as all interested people who have or will have responsibilities in the area of Occupational Safety and Health. "Digitisation of Work: New Risks for Occupational Safety and Health," "Training Workers in the Use of New Digital Technologies," and "The Digitisation of Work and the Psychosocial Health of Workers" will be among the topics discussed and debated. With this initiative, the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Housing and Employment, through the Regional Labour Inspectorate (IRT), seeks to contribute to the dissemination and awareness of workers and employers in the Region to a new and wide-ranging topic in the labour world. The opening session of the seminar "Working Safely and Healthily in the Digital Age" will be chaired by the Regional Secretary for Youth, Housing and Employment, Maria João Carreiro.
