Emanuel Bruno Teixeira Barcelos Regional Director for Spatial Planning and Water Resources
Biographical Note

Emanuel Barcelos was born in February 1983 in the parish of Raminho, Terceira Island.  He graduated in Management and Nature Conservation at the University of the Azores in 2007, having subsequently completed postgraduate studies in Environmental Engineering at the same institution.

He took part in several research projects during his training period, such as the BALA project (Biodiversity of Arthropods of Laurisilva of the Azores) and the INTERFRUTA project. As a member of the Group of Vegetation Applied Ecology of the University of the Azores, he participated in the organisation of the VI International Phytosociology Alpha Meeting under the theme of Biodiversity, Vegetation and Conservation Tools.  

He was a member of the board of the Environmental Centre of the University of the Azores and, during his academic training, he attended several training courses on geographical information systems with a view to their application in land management and biodiversity conservation.

He began his professional activity at the Marine Environment and Technology Laboratory as a researcher, being responsible for the technology park, which in conjunction with several local schools, focused on environmental sustainability, renewable energy and hydrogen.

During that period, he taught at the University of the Azores, as assistant professor, the renewable energy, sustainable development and energy management courses. It was also during this period that he participated in the GreenIslands project, an initiative promoted by the University of the Azores and the MIT Portugal project, being responsible for the assessment of the wind energy potential of the Azores.

He later embraced a personal project in the area of horticultural production and a project for the energetic recovery of forest biomass aimed at contributing to the energy sustainability of the Azores and reducing the import of fuels.

In recent years, he has focused his attention on another area he is passionate about, information technology, undergoing specific training in application development in several languages. He has subsequently begun his professional activity in this area.
