Legal Regime
Heraldic symbols
The heraldic symbols of the Azores are the Flag, the Coat of Arms, the Seal and the Regional Anthem. The use of these regional symbols is governed by the Regional Legislative Decree no. 21/2006/A of June 7, which sets out the legal framework for their use.
The use of heraldic symbols for commercial or advertising purposes requires prior authorisation from the Regional Government of the Azores. The use of the Regional Anthem for commercial advertising purposes is prohibited.
Authorisation to use the heraldic symbols of the Azores shall only be granted provided that their dignity is respected.
Legal regime
The application to be submitted to the Presidency of the Regional Government must include the applicant’s full details, a description of the heraldic symbols to be used, the purpose for which they are intended, as well as supporting documents confirming that the applicant complies with all tax and social security obligations.
Authorisation to use the heraldic symbols of the Azores will only be granted if their dignity is upheld; failure to do so will result in the application being refused.
Authorisation is granted for a specific period, after which the interested party may, if they wish, submit a renewal application.
Should the interested party wish to change the intended use during the period of valid authorisation, they must apply for a new authorisation.
Authorisation request
Authorisation to use heraldic symbols must be requested from the Presidency of the Regional Government by completing a specific form, approved as an annex to Ordinance no. 18/2026 of February 20.
