Azores can lead the way in "sustainable maritime practices," defends President of the Government - Communication

The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, took part this Monday as a guest speaker in the closing panel of the conference "ESG - Maritime and Port Work," held at the Cruise Terminal of Leixões Port.

"I consider the sea a natural asset, giving rise to a country of opportunities and more. The sea is decisive in the domain of the territory and understanding the Portuguese territory, in addition to projecting us into an auspicious future," said José Manuel Boleiro on the occasion.

He added: "The maritime and port business is one of these opportunities, where we can lead by example in the future, with the ability to innovate, modernise and guarantee sustainable development."

The President of the Government emphasised the importance of the country's maritime dimension, recalling the importance of "the Azores and the decisive role they play in the maritime and Atlantic dimension of Portugal," contributing to 56% of its size.

The President of the Regional Government took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of the blue economy in the global context of the climate, energy and digital transitions.

He emphasised the need for a "transition from a purely extractive economy, which depletes resources, to a value economy, focused on preserving and promoting resources, with special emphasis on ecosystems and biodiversity."

José Manuel Bolieiro also praised the importance of dialogue between workers and employers. In this regard, he stressed that "this is an environment for reflection on national interests, focusing on the possibility of harmonising interests that tend to clash through strategic negotiation, with mutual compromises and common benefits."

The closing session was also attended by the Minister of the Economy, Pedro Reis, and the Secretary General of UGT (General Union of Workers ), Mário Mourão.

ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) and Maritime and Port Work is a joint study by FESMAR - Federation of Maritime Workers‘ Unions and FNSTP - National Federation of Port Workers’ Unions, which focuses on labour in the Maritime and Port sectors.

ESG considerations have become increasingly important in the maritime and port administration sectors, with significant implications for operations, investments and long-term sustainability.

With their strategic location in the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores play a "crucial role" in this context. For the Region, which depends heavily on maritime activities for its economy, it is crucial to guarantee fair labour practices and foster strong ties locally.

For the President of the Regional Government, adopting ESG principles in maritime and port administration is "an opportunity for the Azores to harness their geographical position" and become a leader in "sustainable maritime practices," he said.
