The Regional Secretary for Education announced Monday the progress of second phase of the upgrading works of the main building of Horta Basic Education School, with an estimated budget of more than seven million Euros.

The commitment for this legislative term was made during meetings with the School Board and the Parents' Association of this school, being the Regional Government responsible for the reassessment of the previous project.

"In the meantime, and to safeguard safety issues in the building, urgent repair works will be launched in the Block D building," Sofia Ribeiro explained.

The Secretary for Education also revealed that the preschool unit of António José d' Ávila School will be removed, with students being transferred to Pasteleiro School and Vista Alegre School.

"The space does not comply with the legal requirements as the school was not designed for this purpose and there have been warnings from the Civil Protection in this regard," she said.

"At both schools, the safety, monitoring and educational quality conditions are ensured for elementary school and kindergarten levels as well as the provision of extended school hours and school meals. Consequently, students will benefit from better conditions," the government official said.

According to Sofia Ribeiro, this decision "was made in coordination with the School Council and the Parents' Association of Horta Basic Education School."

The Regional Secretary for Education also announced that this school establishment "will receive 45 tablets and 71 laptops under the international tender for the first phase of the Recovery and Resilience Plan."

It should be noted that the Regional Government of the Azores will acquire, through this international tender, five thousand technological devices to be among all schools in the region, representing an overall investment of one million and 800 thousand Euros.
