Between 2021 and 2025, there was a 62% increase in the financial allocation transferred by Social Security for social responses on the island of Pico.
The Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, visited two projects financed under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) on the island today, as part of the Regional Government's statutory visit, highlighting that investment in the social area has increased significantly since 2021.
The ongoing interventions in Madalena and São Roque do Pico are part of the Regional Government's strategy to strengthen the social response network, with a particular focus on supporting the elderly population and improving conditions in social sector institutions.
Work is underway at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Madalena (charity) to expand the Elderly Support Centre, corresponding to a Residential Structure for Elderly People (ERPI). This intervention will provide capacity for 30 users and represents an overall investment of €4,611,000.00, under Government Council Resolution No. 174/2023, co-financed by RRP funds.
As for Santa Casa da Misericórdia de São Roque do Pico, the renovation and expansion of the ERPI with capacity for 60 users is underway, as well as the creation of a new Day Centre for 20 users, corresponding to a total investment of €4,789,640.00, also co-financed by the RRP.
Mónica Seidi pointed out that these investments "represent a clear commitment on the part of the Regional Government to improving social services and providing dignity in old age," pointing out that increased funding under the RRP has accelerated structural projects on the island of Pico.
