The President of the Azorean Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, stressed today that local government is a"development agent" for the territories, sharing the Government's view towards a "reformist vision" for the benefit of the population.

"Local government is an essential intermediary between the government and those administered by municipalities," stated the President of the Regional Government. He spoke at the Sant'Ana Palace in Ponta Delgada after a meeting with the Association of Municipalities of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (AMRAA).

José Manuel Bolieiro acknowledged that the "conciliation of positions" between the Regional Government of the Azores and the municipalities regarding, for example, a revision of the Local Finance Act, emphasising the “responsibility” of the State in achieving full "territorial and social cohesion."

The Azores 2030 Community Framework was also discussed at the meeting, with the need to ‘pick up speed’ on several pieces of legislation. Concerning the revision of the various Municipal Master Plans (PDM) of local authorities, it was agreed that the 14 municipalities that have yet to complete the revision of this instrument will do so by December this year.

AMRAA was established on December 19, 1986, and comprises the 19 municipalities of the archipelago. It was created to promote, represent, support and fulfil municipal interests.

At the meeting with the President of the Government, this entity was represented by the President of the Board of Directors, Carlos Ferreira (Horta), and by members António Miguel Soares (Nordeste), Catarina Cabeceiras (Velas) and Ana Brum (Lajes do Pico).
