Azorean Government congratulates Onésimo Teotónio Almeida, recipient of Vasco Graça Moura Award – Cultural Citizenship - Communication

The Regional Government, through its President, José Manuel Bolieiro, congratulated Onésimo Teotónio Almeida on being awarded the Vasco Graça Moura – Cultural Citizenship Prize in 2025. This distinction recognises his outstanding achievements in promoting Portuguese culture and language worldwide.

The head of the Azorean Government pointed out that this award "is always an event of great expectation," emphasising, however, that in the case of Onésimo Teotónio Almeida, it comes as "no surprise to the Government of the Azores or to anyone else."

"It had to happen at some point, as this award is motivated by the recognition of a distinguished career in promoting Portuguese culture and language around the world,"  stated José Manuel Bolieiro.

Born in Pico da Pedra, São Miguel Island, and based in the United States since 1972, Onésimo Teotónio Almeida has built an academic and intellectual career of considerable international renown, being recognised as one of the most important figures in contemporary Portuguese culture.

For José Manuel Bolieiro, this distinction "acknowledges and honours not only the author's brilliant intellectual career" but also "the invaluable contribution" he has made "to the promotion of culture, critical thinking and Portuguese identity, in the diaspora and around the world."

"His work, marked by depth and the ability to bridge tradition and modernity, continues to inspire generations and enrich our cultural heritage," highlighted the President of the Government. 

The Azorean Government noted that this distinction represents a ‘fair recognition’ of the commitment and excellence that have been the hallmark of Onésimo Teotónio Almeida's path, contributing significantly to the recognition of the Portuguese language and national culture on the international scene.

“On behalf of the Regional Government, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations and best wishes for continued inspiration and success in your cultural and academic initiatives,” concluded José Manuel Bolieiro.
