The Regional Secretary for Youth, Housing and Employment, Maria João Carreiro, launched today a public tender for the renovation and energy efficiency enhancement of 37 houses in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island.

The works contract, now put out to tender, with a base price of €882,925.00 plus VAT, and a completion period of 240 days, is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) for the Region. It will enable the modernisation of 37 houses located in the Nossa Senhora de Fátima housing development in the parish of Santa Cruz.

The public tender for this works contract runs until October 23 this year, according to the notice published today in the Official Journal of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The work to be carried out under this works contract focuses on electrical networks and installations, telecommunications infrastructure, demolition works, drainage and slope improvement, special foundations, waterproofing and insulation, and formwork, among others.

The urban development of the Nossa Senhora de Fátima housing development has a long and troubled history as a residential area with precarious buildings that began to emerge in the 1970s, built by people seeking work opportunities at the Lajes Air Base.

The deterioration of the dwellings built there worsened over the years, without any intervention by successive regional governments.

Since November 2020, the efforts undertaken by the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition government have focused on the issuance of housing division permits for 112 plots, including 102 for housing, which needed to be registered with the Tax Authorities and the Registry Office. This was preventing the registration of lease agreements with resident tenants and exchanges with owners and, consequently, obtaining EU funding under the RRP.

In October last year, Maria João Carreiro awarded the works contract for the construction of 39 houses in the Nossa Senhora de Fátima housing development, an investment of over €7.7 million, fully financed by the RRP and with a completion period of 450 days.

The 39 houses under construction for the benefit of families already living in that neighbourhood include 11 two-bedroom houses, 20 three-bedroom houses, and eight four-bedroom houses. This project meets the expectations of resident families and provides the area with better conditions.
