The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, recalled in the week marking World Cheese Day that the Azores produce 32 thousand tonnes of cheese annually.

"Azorean cheeses have a high nutritional quality and unique identity typical of our Region, with significant historical value and future. They bring with them genuineness and project sustainability. Azorean cheeses are one of our trademarks," he said.

The Regional Secretary also emphasised "the relevance and role that cheese plays in the Azorean economy," praising all those who contribute to the importance of our cheese.

"Cheese fosters the connection between culture and social interaction. We have a myriad of flavours that enhance our cuisine and the archipelago," continued António Ventura.

"Regional production makes an important contribution to the sustainability of the economy, the promotion of products and tourist attraction through the cuisine and tradition associated with it. The cheeses produced in the Azores have been awarded prizes in numerous national and international competitions, confirming their quality," stated the Regional Secretary.
