On Friday, the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, highlighted the "strategic importance of the agricultural sector in the Region's economy." He also announced new support measures during the opening session of the X Micaelense Holstein Friesian Autumn Competition, which took place at the São Miguel Exhibition Park in Santana, Ribeira Grande.

José Manuel Bolieiro praised the role of Jorge Rita, President of the São Miguel Agricultural Association and the Azores Agricultural Federation, in the uncompromising defence of farmers.

"Jorge Rita's work is an example of dedication to our agriculture, and we recognise his efforts to promote Azorean farmers," he said.

The President of the Government reiterated his commitment to the primary sector and its role in "generating wealth" in the Azores.

"We are committed to promoting our agriculture, rural development and agrifood sector, which are essential for the Region's economic and social sustainability," he said.

Among the announcements was the opening in December of a new application period to support the purchase of maize and sorghum seeds, with an 80% co-funding rate.

This measure, implemented for the third consecutive year, demonstrates the Government's "ongoing commitment" to supporting farmers.

"It is with specific actions like this that we show our commitment to the Azorean farmers," he emphasised.

An important update is the extension of support for purchasing straw, hay, and pressed lucerne until December 6. This support amounts to 10 cents per kilo and covers more than 10,000 tonnes of fibrous food that have been available since February. The investment exceeds one million Euros.

This measure was essential to mitigate the impacts of last winter's harsh weather.

The head of the Azorean Government also announced the opening of an application period for the conversion of milk production to meat on December 3, an initiative intended to contribute to the restructuring of dairy farming in São Miguel, Terceira and Graciosa.

"Portugal has a deficit of about 50% in beef production, and the Azores have a unique opportunity to address this food deficit," he said.

Also within the scope of the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan (PEPAC), it was revealed that the premium for the first installation of young farmers will be set at 55 thousand Euros, covering all agricultural sectors. There will also be an incentive of 15 thousand Euros for young people who opt for part-time farming.

The session was attended by several important organisations, including the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, the Mayor of Ribeira Grande, Alexandre Gaudêncio, and the President of the General Assembly of the São Miguel Agricultural Association, Eugénio Parreira Câmara.

With these measures, the Regional Government is reiterating its "confidence in the primary sector" and its "commitment to supporting farmers in facing challenges and strengthening the Azorean economy," stressed the President of the Government.
