The Regional Secretariat for Finance, Planning and Public Administration signed today a collaboration protocol with the Azores Regional Section of the Portuguese Architects' Association to define an intervention strategy for the facilities of the old sugar mill and alcohol plant.

According to Duarte Freitas, "With this cooperation, the Regional Government reiterates its commitment to promoting the preservation and enhancement of regional heritage, combining innovation, sustainability and community involvement."

The signing of this protocol is intended to "involve civil society to promote public debate and listen to the community so that, within a year, viable proposals can be presented for the redevelopment of these spaces," he said.

This protocol stipulates the establishment of two working groups dedicated to the plant facilities located in Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, with the independent coordination of the Portuguese Architects' Association.

This protocol also aims to fulfil the resolutions of the Azorean parliament, which have long demanded a structured and purposeful study of the former plant sites.

For the Regional Secretary for Finance, Planning and Public Administration, collaboration with the Azores Regional Section of the Portuguese Architects' Association represents a significant step to ensure that the redevelopment of these spaces is "carried out independently and with due technical rigour."

This action is part of the Regional Government's strategic approach aimed at improving asset management and reducing costs. It also paves the way for the sale of assets to the private sector, generating revenue and revitalising the local economy.
