President of the Government visits Francisco de Lacerda Museum Permanent Exhibition in Calheta
location Calheta, São Jorge

Presidência do Governo Regional

The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, visited today the Permanent Exhibition of the Francisco de Lacerda Museum, in Calheta, São Jorge, a "day of joy" and consolidation of the Azores destination regarding sustainability.

"Today is a day of joy. We finally have the chance to have a permanent exhibition at the Francisco de Lacerda Museum with three thematic areas that stand out: the island, its geography and population, the theme of music and the reference to the canning industry," he said.

With the exhibition, São Jorge has a new attraction for tourists, featuring "historical content that makes the Azores and the local population proud."

"We will be recognised as an archipelago of sustainability that attracts young people and seniors alike," continued the President of the Government.

The Azorean music section consists of four rooms: one for popular music, which honours the "viola da terra" (traditional Azorean guitar) and musical traditions, both religious and profane; a classical music room, which will have a regional presentation, with special emphasis on Azorean musicians and their organs scattered throughout the archipelago; Maestro Francisco de Lacerda is highlighted as "The European," considering his international career, although without ever forgetting his native island; finally, there is also a room dedicated to philharmonic bands, so dear to the island and which, even today, are survivors and pioneers of our immaterial musical heritage.

The section dedicated to the canning industry comprises three rooms. It aims to place this former plant in the regional context of the canning industry, which has always developed as a network and has not been limited to one island.

The Francisco de Lacerda Museum is installed in the grounds and industrial building of the former Marie d'Anjou Cannery, located across the Calheta port.
