Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change promotes "Circular Events +" campaign

The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change will deliver about 90 thousand reusable cups to the organising committees of events held in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, aiming to replace single-use cups, as part of the "Events +Circular" campaign, as part of the Regional Circular Economy Roadmap.

Marking this initiative symbolically, Alonso Miguel met today with the Organising Committee of the Santo António do Porto de São Mateus da Calheta Festivities, Terceira Island, where he delivered the first three thousand cups. On the occasion, he noted that "with this campaign, we intended to promote the prevention of waste production, thus contributing to more circular and sustainable events as well as raising awareness among participants about the importance of eliminating single-use cups. 

"In November 2022, 74 applications from eight islands of the archipelago were submitted under this Campaign: 22 from São Miguel, 16 from Terceira, 12 from Pico, 12 from São Jorge, five from Faial, three from Flores, three from Santa Maria and one from Graciosa.  Among the applications registered, 29 were submitted by cultural and recreational associations, 21 by associations (youth associations, dance groups and clubs), 18 by organising committees, and six by other associations or social solidarity institutions."

Alonso Miguel added that "89,993 cups have been delivered, distributed among all eligible applications, including 950 to be delivered in Flores, 1,050 in Faial, 2,885 in Santa Maria, 4,350 in Graciosa, 15,600 in Pico, 19,280 in São Jorge, 19,750 in Terceira and 26,128 in São Miguel. This campaign represents an investment of about 20 thousand Euros."

"This action is falls within in the Regional Circular Economy Roadmap. It includes a series of actions to be implemented in 2022 and 2023 with the aim of enhancing the circular economy of the Eegion,under the Azores 2020 Operational Programme. The initiative is financed by ERDF, REACT-EU programme: "Green Economy Project - Promotion of measures and investment support for circular economy elements in the Azores," said the government official.
