O COA é co-Task Leader em parceria com a Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto do work package relativo a elaboração de normas de política de saúde nesta temática.

Joint Action JANE 2 - Joint Action Networks of Expertise on Cancer
Summary: Four‑year European project funded by the EU4HEALTH Programme, integrating the Azores Oncology Centre (COA) into a network of experts in personalised cancer prevention. COA serves as co‑Task Leader, in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, within the work package dedicated to the development of health policy standards in this field.

Joint Action ECAN Plus - Joint Action on Enhancing the Digital Capabilities of Cancer Centres in Europe to Improve Prevention and Care
A Joint Action ‘Enhancing digital capabilities of cancer centres in Europe to improve prevention and care’ (eCAN Plus) é um projeto emblemático da União Europeia no domínio da oncologia digital e da troca transfronteiriça de dados de saúde. O seu objetivo é tornar os benefícios da saúde digital acessíveis a todos os cidadãos, doentes e profissionais de saúde.
A iniciativa reúne 81 organizações de 23 países europeus. Juntas, procuram responder ao aumento da incidência de cancro, cuja ocorrência deverá crescer cerca de 20% até 2040. No âmbito deste esforço — e com base na experiência adquirida na Ação Conjunta eCAN (2022–2024) — o projeto visa testar e implementar, de forma segura e fiável, a integração de ferramentas digitais e dados de saúde, promovendo uma melhor utilização e reutilização desses dados. A expansão da telemedicina e o enquadramento jurídico proporcionado pelo Espaço Europeu de Dados de Saúde constituem a base para operacionalizar estes mecanismos.
Através de um mapeamento abrangente dos contextos existentes, de programas de formação, casos de utilização e projetos-piloto, o eCAN Plus pretende também reforçar a cooperação entre centros oncológicos e desenvolver as competências digitais dos profissionais de saúde. Além disso, ao recolher e partilhar conhecimento entre os países participantes, o eCAN Plus ambiciona elaborar recomendações e identificar boas práticas ao longo de todo o percurso dos cuidados oncológicos, contribuindo para melhorar o acesso dos doentes a cuidados de saúde eficazes e de qualidade.

Joint Action ECAN Plus - Joint Action on Enhancing the Digital Capabilities of Cancer Centres in Europe to Improve Prevention and Care
The Joint Action ‘Enhancing digital capabilities of cancer centres in Europe to improve prevention and care’ (eCAN Plus) is a flagship EU project in digital oncology and cross-border health data exchange. Its goal is to make the benefits of digital health accessible to all citizens, patients and healthcare professionals.
The initiative involves 81 organisations from 23 European countries. Together, they seek to address the increasing incidence of cancer, expected to rise by 20% by 2040. As part of this effort and building on the eCAN Joint Action’s experience (2022-2024), this project involves testing and piloting the safe and secure integration of digital tools and health data in order to improve the use and re-use of health data. The growing adoption of telemedicine tools and the European Health Data Space’s legal framework provide the foundation for implementing these mechanisms.
Through comprehensive mapping of current scenarios, training programmes, use cases, and pilots, eCAN Plus also intends to strengthen collaboration among cancer centres and enhance the digital skills of healthcare professionals. Moreover, by gathering and sharing knowledge from participating countries, eCAN Plus expects to develop recommendations and highlight best practices along the cancer care pathway, thereby improving patients’ access to effective healthcare.

Joint Action CANCERWATCH - Improving Quality and Timeliness of Cancer Registry Data feeding into the European Cancer Information System
Resumo: Projeto europeu com duração de 3 anos financiado pelo EU4HEALTH que pretende contribuir para a melhoria da qualidade dos registos oncológicos na Europa e irá permitir relevantes avanços na definição da informação sobre incidência, prevalência, sobrevivência e mortalidade de uma forma integrada, automatizada e atempada e que permitirá comparar e reduzir iniquidades entre os diversos países. O COA participa enquanto entidade afiliada do IPO Porto (entidade nacional competente enquanto coordenadora do Registo Oncológico Nacional) e em conjunto com os demais registos oncológicos a nível nacional (Continente e Madeira).

Joint Action CANCERWATCH - Improving Quality and Timeliness of Cancer Registry Data feeding into the European Cancer Information System
Summary:
Three‑year European project funded by the EU4HEALTH Programme. Its objective is to improve the quality of cancer registry data across Europe, enabling significant advances in defining incidence, prevalence, survival and mortality data in an integrated, automated and timely manner, thereby supporting comparisons and reducing inequalities between countries. COA participates as an affiliated entity of IPO Porto, the national coordinator of the National Cancer Registry, alongside the other national registries (Mainland Portugal and Madeira).

Projeto ÚNICA - Unified Network for International Cancer Advancement
Resumo: Projeto europeu com duração de 4 anos financiado pelo EU4HEALTH que visa criar uma rede de dados de imagem oncológica derivados de programas de rastreio de cancro de mama, pulmão e próstata. O objetivo é disponibilizar conjuntos de dados diversos e representativos de toda a Europa — incluindo áreas geográficas atualmente sub-representadas — a fim de acelerar o desenvolvimento de soluções de diagnóstico baseadas em IA. O COA é Parceiro Associado não financeiro. A participação da Região é assegurada pelo Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo de Ponta Delgada.

Projeto ÚNICA - Unified Network for International Cancer Advancement
Summary: Four‑year European project funded by the EU4HEALTH Programme, aiming to create a network of oncology imaging data derived from breast, lung and prostate cancer screening programmes. The objective is to make available diverse and representative datasets from across Europe — including currently under‑represented geographical areas — to accelerate the development of AI‑based diagnostic solutions. COA is a non‑financial Associated Partner. Regional participation is ensured by the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada.
