Born on June 1, 1982
Berto Messias studied International Relations at the University of Coimbra.
He was the President of the Students' Centre for International Relations at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, having organised and promoted partnerships at various national and international conferences on this academic field.
He was elected Vice-President of the Students' Union of the University of Coimbra for educational policy, being also responsible for the institutional relations with other students' unions throughout the country. He was also a member of the Senate of the University of Coimbra and the students’ representative to the Education Council of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra.
He has been a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores since November 2008 and, from that date to November 2010, he served as Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party and was also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs and of the Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores.
From November 2005 to November 2008, he served as Head of the Cabinet of the Mayor of Praia da Vitória. He was also a member of the Municipal Assembly of Praia da Vitória, where he chaired the Standing Committee of this Assembly and coordinated the Socialist Party Group.
In November 2010, he was elected President of the Parliamentary Group, a position he held until the end of the IX Legislative Term and throughout the X Legislative Term.
