Regional Legislative Decree No 17/2005/A of 20 July 2005, published in Diário da Republica No 138, I Series A of 20 July, established the Regional Fund for Support for Cohesion and Economic Development, the organisation of which was approved by Regional Regulatory Decree No 22/2006/A of 29 June, published in the Diário da República No 124, Series I B of 29 June.

Within the framework of the guidelines laid down by the Regional Government, the tasks of the Regional Cohesion Fund include the following:
(
a) collaborate in the definition and implementation of development policies in the area of the economy;
(b) financially support the supply of essential goods and services to the population of the various islands;
(c) to promote and provide financial support for the installation and installation of infrastructure for the storage of essential goods, particularly in the field of fuels, on islands where such investments, by reason of their size and market conditions, are not economically viable;
(d) provide financial support for the public air and maritime transport service of inter-island passengers and goods and the infrastructure and equipment necessary for the provision of these services, in particular aerodromes, terminals and ports;
(e) financially support the implementation of programme contracts, as part of tourism promotion, aimed at external markets, involving public or private partners;
(f) cooperate with other entities in the definition and implementation of the price formation policy;
(g) manage the processing and payment of financial support granted under the incentive schemes, at regional and national level, under the responsibility of the government department responsible for the economy;
(h) cooperate with other public or private entities for the development and economic cohesion of the region;
(I) to cooperate with other entities, in particular in the form of financial aid, in the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure relevant to development and economic cohesion.
The Regional Cohesion
Fund is headed by a governing board, composed of a president and two other members.
