The Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, through the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC), is carrying out a new training session on May 9 and 10 as part of the Plan for Dissemination of Scientific and Technological Knowledge for 2022. It will be focused on the enhancement of Terceira island's fortresses.

This initiative, with the title "History and Strategies for the Enhancement of the Fortresses of Terceira Island - Practical Cases," will be promoted in a face-to-face format in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island.

This two-day course is coordinated by Raimundo Silva, a Professor at the University of Coimbra, in conjunction with architect Ignácio Crespo. It will be taught using the expository method with debate, presentation and discussion of practical cases, including visits to monuments with educational purposes and interventions on cultural built heritage.

Fortified buildings play an important role in the context of the Azores' built heritage. They stand as a testimony to the many centuries of history, the evolution of the Region and its relations with the world.

Knowing in detail the main fortifications of Terceira Island, from the imposing Fortress of São João Batista in Monte Brazil to the remains of military equipment of defence lines, is an essential task for the promotion, safeguarding and enhancement of this heritage.

It is this experience that is offered to participants, with a programme focused on the studies conducted by Architect Ignácio Crespo on the defence strategy of Terceira Island over the centuries.

In addition to the exploration and understanding of these spaces and constructions, it is intended to promote a structured debate on strategies and intervention techniques applicable to the heritage in question.

Participation in this course, as in all LREC events, requires the completion of a registration form. It is available on the Azores Government portal on the LREC website at lrec.azores.gov.pt, where the course programme is also available.
