The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, chaired on Monday evening the solemn session celebrating the 500th anniversary of the elevation of Lagoa to town status and municipality seat, and the 10th anniversary of its elevation to city status. On the occasion, he announced that this municipality will host this year's celebrations of the Azores Day to be held on June 6.

Fulfilling what had been defined even before the covid-19 pandemic, Lagoa will be the next municipality to host the Azores Day celebrations.

“We will be here to celebrate,” announced José Manuel Bolieiro.

During the solemn session, the President of the Government congratulated the municipality and the people of Lagoa, showing himself "honoured and encouraged with the mobilisation" and the projection of future "that Lagoa gives to the Azores."

"History honours the challenge and the motivation of the people of Lagoa" continued the President of the Government, before praising the "ambition that projects the future" of the municipality. He also assured the commitment of the XIII Government of the Azores, in conjunction with local authorities, to the development of Lagoa.

José Manuel Bolieiro also addressed the current conflict in Eastern Europe, defending that the present time "is not the time for weapons," but rather the time for "passion for history" and for thinking of the future "in harmony, peace and progress."

The Ceremony followed, among other moments, with the tribute paid to 41 institutions/associations from Lagoa, which were awarded the diploma and medal of Municipal Merit.
