The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, opened today the Espigão Grande agricultural road, located in the parish of Pilar da Bretanha, municipality of Ponta Delgada. This represents the accomplishment of an aspiration towards the development of an "essential sector in the economy" of the Azores.

"We have managed to achieve in the Azores segments of excellence with our products in Portugal and in Europe," the President of the Government said, recognising the "history of the sector." He also expressed his "hope" for a prosperous future for the agricultural sector and its products.

“All of them have endeavoured to ensure that, besides this long-awaited aspiration, we have been able to move forward with its accomplishment," added the President of the Government. In this regard, he recalled that during his time as Mayor of Ponta Delgada, he had already been aware of the existing problems in the area and of the possible improvements to be made.

"I am here between history and the present. It is with great joy that I see that not only has the electrification been completed in this basin, but also the water supply and a new access to divert excess water, preventing damages, have been implemented. I believe that this greatly values the parish," stressed José Manuel Bolieiro.

The road opened today, which was presented to dozens of guests by the President of the Regional Institute of Agrarian Planning (IROA), Hernâni Costa, has an average width of four metres. The longitudinal drainage is included in this width, through the drainage system towards the middle.

The Espigão Grande road is about 730 metres long and its paving structure consists of a 15 cm cement concrete wearing layer over a 20 cm thick lapilli base.

The intervention covered an area of around 19 hectares, encompassing 23 plots of land belonging to 12 farms.

The overall investment amounted to 160 thousand Euros.
