Presidência do Governo Regional
The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, received in audience the Apostolic Nuncio to Portugal, Archbishop Ivo Scapolo, having praised his visit to the Azores, which "honours and dignifies" the Region.
"Interpreting the feeling of our people, I would like to emphasise the importance and appreciation for this visit," said José Manuel Bolieiro at the end of the meeting held at the Sant'Ana Palace.
The "ongoing process" for the appointment of a new Bishop of Angra was one of the themes addressed at the meeting, which also highlighted "the support provided by the Church in so many areas," from childhood to the elderly.
The "anxiety" that São Jorge residents are feeling at the moment, with the seismic crisis on the island, was also addressed, with faith also being an ally at these moments, stressed the President of the Government.
Ivo Scapolo was born in Padua on July 24, 1953, and was ordained a priest on June 4, 1978. He joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1984, serving in the pontifical representations in Angola, Portugal and the United States of America as well as in the section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State.
As apostolic nuncio, he represented the Holy See in Bolivia (2002-2008), Rwanda (2008-2011) and Chile (2011-2019), before arriving in Portugal.
