The Regional Secretariat for Culture, Science and Digital Transition, through the Regional Directorate for Culture and the Graciosa Museum, promotes, starting today, the temporary exhibition under the title “Time Capsules, the Azores Underwater Cultural Heritage.”

The itinerary exhibition project will be open until April 17 and is part of the Margullar 2 Project, an initiative jointly financed by Interreg-MAC. It aims to present the stories of shipwrecks documented in Azorean seas and the geostrategic importance of the archipelago in the European expansion of the 15th century.

Scattered through the waters of the Azorean seas lie about a thousand shipwrecks which, as individual narratives of maritime disasters, represent time capsules of eras which, as if in a magic machine, allow access to past eras that embody the relevant underwater heritage of the archipelago.

The exhibition, made up of a dozen panels, presents various pieces that have never been displayed before. They are related to the shipwrecks discovered in recent years in the Azorean seas, which were a unique and privileged access to Europe as well as a crossing point and a free trade territory, supporting the great navigations, through which the European expansion was achieved.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
