17 new cases of covid-19 were diagnosed in the Azores in the last 24 hours, with 16 identified on the island of São Miguel and one on the island of Terceira, following 1,859 tests carried out in the two laboratories of reference in the Region.
The case diagnosed on the island of Terceira concerns an inmate transferred from São Miguel to Terceira that tested positive on the 6th day at Angra do Heroísmo prison establishment, where he was kept in isolation.
On the island of São Miguel, all new cases were identified within a context of community transmission: eight in the municipality of Ribeira Grande (five in Rabo de Peixe, two in Calhetas and one in Matriz); five in the municipality of Ponta Delgada (Livramento, São Roque, Fajã de Baixo, Covoada and São Vicente Ferreira, with one case each); one in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo in the parish of São Miguel; one in the municipality of Lagoa in the parish of Água de Pau and one in the municipality of Nordeste in the parish of Achadinha.
In the same period, 30 recoveries were registered, all on the island of São Miguel: eight in Lagoa, six in Ponta Delgada, five in Ribeira Grande, 10 in Vila Franca do Campo and one in Nordeste (see table at the end).
A non-resident, confirmed positive case, who was staying in Nordeste, São Miguel Island, has left the Region.
There are currently nine patients hospitalised, eight of them at the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital in Ponta Delgada, with four patients in intensive care, and one at the Santo Espírito Hospital of Terceira Island in intensive care. There are 1,288 active surveillance cases.
As of today, the Region registers 292 active positive cases: 276 on the island of São Miguel, eight on the island of Terceira, seven on the island of Santa Maria and one on the island of Flores. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,772 positive cases of covid-19 have been diagnosed in the Azores, with 4,328 people recovering from the disease. There were 31 deaths, 78 people who left the archipelago and 43 cases with a history of previous cure.
There are two active transmission chains, one on the island of Terceira and another between the islands of São Miguel and Terceira. A total of 199 transmission chains have been extinguished.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 435,102 tests have been carried out in the Azores to test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes covid-19 disease. The island of São Miguel remains at High Risk, being subject to the containment measures corresponding to this level of risk. All municipalities of the remaining islands of the archipelago are at Very Low Risk. From last December 31, 2020, to April 21, 69,887 people aged 15 or over were vaccinated in the archipelago: 49,477 received the first dose (24.42% coverage rate) and 20,410 the second dose (10.08% coverage rate), as part of the first phase of the Regional Vaccination Plan.
