The Regional Government, through IROA, S.A., has signed the contract for the construction of the Cedros Water Supply System - Cedros/Praia do Almoxarife Agricultural Planning Perimeter on Faial Island, intending to improve the water resilience of local agricultural activity.

Awarded to the company Vitor Manuel Dias Fernandes, the project represents an investment of €139,112.46 and has a stipulated completion period of 120 days.

The work, located in the Cascalho area, parish of Cedros, involves the construction of new infrastructure, including a reservoir with a 250 cubic-metre capacity and the installation of a supply point for use by farmers.

The new infrastructure will directly benefit 48 farms, covering an area of approximately 149 hectares.

The project is supported by the Horta Municipal Council, which will ensure the adoption of the system.

For the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, the project "represents a decisive step in strengthening the water infrastructure of Faial Island and providing direct support to local agricultural activity."

"This is a structural investment that will significantly improve water availability for dozens of farms, increasing the resilience, productivity and security of farmers,’ emphasises the government official, highlighting the vision geared towards the efficient and sustainable use of resources.

António Ventura also praised the cooperation between regional and local authorities, considering the project "a clear example of how well-targeted investments can generate lasting benefits for the agricultural sector and the future of agriculture."

This intervention in Faial is part of a wider range of projects agreed between the Environmental Fund and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, which will see a total of €1 million invested across all islands in the installation of equipment to support water storage for agriculture.
