Google chooses Azores once more for mooring new submarine cable
Vice-Presidência do Governo Regional
Tech giant Google announced today a major new investment, a new transatlantic fibre optic submarine cable designated as SOL. This cable, which will connect the United States (Florida) to Spain (Santander), will have the unique feature of being moored in the Azores (São Miguel Island).
"The Government of the Azores welcomes this important investment in the Azores with great enthusiasm and congratulates Google on its pioneering and strategic approach, confirming its full alignment with our vision: that the Azores are increasingly important and strategic hub for digital connectivity in Europe and the North Atlantic, " stressed the Vice-President of the Government, Artur Lima, who is responsible for attracting foreign investment and the Communications and Digital Transition sectors.
It should be noted that, in 2024, the mooring of the NUVEM cable in the Azores was announced. Then, in 2025, the mooring of the SOL cable was announced.
"The mooring of these cables in the archipelago will boost a range of new economic and technological opportunities with huge benefits for our Region, as well as highlighting our geostrategic importance," stated Artur Lima.
