The Regional Secretary for Youth, Housing and Employment, Maria João Carreiro,  received in audience, on behalf of the President of the Regional Government, the President of Lions Clubs International Association, Fabrício Oliveira.

The audience, held today at the Conceição Palace in Ponta Delgada, preceded the 56th National Convention of Lions Portugal Multiple District 115, which will take place tomorrow, Saturday, at Nonagon – São Miguel Science and Technology Park in the city of Lagoa, São Miguel Island.

On that occasion, the government official praised the Azores for hosting an event that brought together three hundred participants and Lions leaders from the Azores, Madeira and Mainland Portugal, as well as foreign Lions entities, namely the official representative of Lions Multiple District 111 from the Federal Republic of Germany.

Maria João Carreiro also praised the Lions' “causes and practical action” in promoting the well-being of populations in areas such as childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, the environment, humanitarian efforts, hunger, vision or youth, pointing out that these are causes running across regional public governance in the Azores.

The Regional Secretary also congratulated the Lagoa-Azores Lions Club, represented by its President, Primitivo Marques, who was part of the delegation received in audience, for the "willingness and determination to propose the Azores, and particularly Lagoa, as the venue for what is one of the most important events in the annual Lions' calendar."

"The Azores will go down in the history of this 56th National Convention not only for the internal reflection that the Region will foster and encourage but also for the social, cultural and gastronomic diversity that the island of São Miguel, in particular, has to offer," she said.
