The Azores will host the 22nd Plenary Session of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which will take place at the Terceira Mar Hotel in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, on July 3 and 4.

The opening session, scheduled for 9:30 am on July 3, will be chaired by the Vice-President of the Regional Government, Artur Lima, and will also include speeches by the Director of the OECD Development Centre, Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir, and the Permanent Representative of Portugal to the OECD, Manuel Lobo Antunes.

The works of the plenary session, under the theme "Initiative on Global Value Chains, Transformation of Production and Development," will be divided into six sessions. They will address topics such as the Outermost Regions, sustainability, globalisation, transport, connectivity, energy transition, digital transition, blue economy, regional cooperation, agri-food and statistical data, among others.

The closing session, scheduled for July 4 at 3:50 pm, will be attended by the Regional Secretary for Finance, Planning and Public Administration, Duarte Freitas.

Preceding the 22nd plenary session, the meeting of a Peer Learning Group on "Bioeconomy for Sustainable Development in the Amazon Region: Natural Assets for Economic, Social and Environmental Transformation" will take place on July 2, in cooperation between the OECD and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Brazil.

This event, which takes place in the Azores in partnership with the Regional Government, is annually held in one of the regions/cities of OECD members.

The initiative is a platform for policy dialogue and knowledge sharing between OECD and non-OECD countries. It aims to improve evidence and identify policy guidelines to promote development, participation and modernisation in global value chains (GVCs).

The Azores have been working with the OECD to provide an analytical framework to update and expand EU support mechanisms for integration into global value chains.

The OECD is an international organisation with 38 member countries, founded in 1961, with Portugal as one of its founding members.

It has as its mission to promote policies to improve global economic and social well-being, serving as a forum for governments to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems.
