The Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Health and Social Security, expresses its deep sorrow at the recent death of José Gabriel Coelho Gil.
A professional respected by his peers and much loved by his patients, Dr. Coelho Gil worked for the benefit of the Region not only through his clinical activity but also through the responsibilities he took on throughout his career.
Graduated in Medicine from the University of Coimbra, the cardiologist was a key member of the group that pioneered cardiology care in the Azores and headed the Cardiology Service at Angra Hospital from its inception until his retirement.
He was also one of the members of the installing committee of the Angra do Heroísmo Nursing School, and Director of the Angra Hospital between 1978 and 1982. How he managed the works in the aftermath of the 1980 earthquake remains in the collective memory.
The Region acknowledged his professional achievements with the Autonomous Commendation of Professional Merit in 2012 and, at this time of grief, the Government of the Azores joins his family and friends with words of sorrow and sympathy.
