The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, congratulated the São Miguel Agricultural Association on another livestock show featuring the Holstein Friesian breed.

António Ventura spoke at the opening of the 20th São Miguel Holstein Friesian Breed Competition, which took place at the São Miguel Exhibition Park in Ribeira Grande.

"The excellence of this breed is a good reflection of the work, dedication and commitment of producers in making genetic investments to breed animals that produce food essential for supporting humankind, such as milk and its derivatives," he said.

The Secretary for Agriculture stated that the competition "could very well be an international event, given the quality of the animals, the links and connections with other parts of the world, the visits from technicians and other associations from other countries and the exceptional organisation of the São Miguel Agricultural Association."

"It is, therefore, a source of satisfaction and pride for the Regional Government to attend this competition, knowing its positive effects in the Azores and across borders," he emphasised.

António Ventura also highlighted the "benefits in the field of agricultural production sustainability, the existence of an animal genetic reserve in the Region, the possibility of exporting live animals for dairy farming, and the promotion of high-quality milk and dairy products."

He continued: "The Azores have established themselves as a milk-producing Region, surpassing 30 percent of the country's overall production."

The Regional Secretary also pointed out that the São Miguel Agricultural Association has, over the years, "hosted a livestock show that greatly honours the Azores and secures one of the Azores' production assets - dairy farming - which is and will continue to be at the heart of the regional economy."
