The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Food, marks once again World Milk Day, this year with a flyer distributed to schools across the Region and a message sent to milk producers in the Azores.

Organised by the Institute for Food and Agricultural Markets (IAMA) and distributed today in digital format, this campaign is expected to have reached about 16 thousand students via email in partnership with the Regional Directorate for Education and Educational Administration.

In turn, milk producers in the Azores will receive tomorrow a message with the following content: "Today is World Milk Day. We express our gratitude for your commitment to obtaining a vital product for human nutrition. Azorean farmers are the main contributors to the sustainable development of this Region. They protect nature and generate wealth. Thank you."

World Milk Day is celebrated on June 1. It is a UN initiative, through the Specialised Agency for Food and Agriculture - FAO, which since 2001 has been joined by more than 80 countries to highlight the importance of milk in human nutrition.

With these initiatives, the Regional Government aims to highlight the nutritional qualities of milk as well as the way it is produced in an increasingly competitive market in Portugal, Europe and the world.

This day highlights the importance of milk producers and other agents involved in the milk production chain, which is so important for the health and well-being of the population.
