The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food announced today, in Angra do Heroísmo, that the Regional Wine Commission (CVR-Açores) had already registered 97 brands, 142 commercial references and 36 economic agents in the first five months of 2024, a much higher figure than in the last five years.
"We have more commercial references, more commercial brands and more economic agents in five months, compared to the last five years, when in no other year has this record been broken, and this represents the vitality and dynamics of the sector like never before," he stressed.
António Ventura spoke at the opening of Wine in Azores, emphasising that there is "an interest and desire to invest in wine production in the Azores due to private initiative."
The government official also stated that the VITIS EU programme will open this year to all wine producers, explaining the delay in opening applications as a result of the demand made on the National Government to consider the Region's vineyards as "historic" so that abandoned vineyards can be included.
The Regional Secretary also announced that the Azores Brand, now under the administration of the Agriculture department, will be able to support this type of event, such as Wine in Azores, on all islands, not only at a regional level but also outside the Region.
"What should be the advertising and promotion of our agricultural products, including wines, should also be part of the Azores Brand, as wines are an Azorean brand, so the Azores Brand should take into account the efforts of promoters," he said.
With regard to research and experimentation, António Ventura also pointed out that a research project is underway, in partnership with the University of the Azores, to improve "our traditional grape varieties," namely verdelho, arinto dos Açores and terrantez do Pico.
