The Azores were chosen by the voters of the Viajes National Geographic magazine as the "Best European Destination," highlighting them as an "oceanic microworld teeming with life."

"We are very proud! It is yet another international accolade, recognised and fully credible, which demonstrates the quality of our tourism and the heights to which we have managed to take our Region," said Berta Cabral, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures.

The announcement of the award was published on Thursday in issue 290 of Viajes National Geographic magazine and on the website of the same publication.

According to the publication, this award depicts the Azores as "a string of pearls anchored in the middle of the Atlantic, with good air connections and a wide variety of tourist infrastructures."

For Berta Cabral, this is an "emphatic and praiseworthy recognition" of the work that has been done by the Regional Government, Visit Azores and entrepreneurs in the sector to promote the Region abroad, increasing international connectivity and developing and qualifying the destination and the products available.

"This is clear evidence that the tourism development strategy we are following is the right one," she stressed.

The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures went even further, pointing out that the magazine emphasises that "each of the nine islands of the Azores offers unique landscapes where multiple activities can be carried out."

"It only adds to our key goal of having tourism all year round on all the islands," she explained, pointing out that "diversity has to be a strong point for tourism" in the Region.

She added: "The diversity of adventure tourism combined with the natural and cultural richness of the nine islands of the Azores is a differentiating factor that helps disperse tourist flows throughout the territory and mitigate seasonality."
