The Presidency of the Government of the Azores joins the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites with the opening to the public of the Sant'Ana Palace, in Ponta Delgada, and the Capitães-Generais Palace, in Angra do Heroísmo, this Thursday, April 18.

The Sant'Ana Palace will host four guided tours, between 5.30 pm and 7:45 pm, with a duration of about 60 minutes, for groups of 25 people. These tours are intended to give an insight into the building, built in the mid-19th century as a residence for the Jácome Correia family, which has housed the Presidency of the Government of the Azores since 1980.

The palace's garden, a remarkable example of landscape and botany, will also be open from 10 am to 8 pm. Admission is free.

In turn, the Capitães-Generais Palace will be open from 10 am to 5 pm, free of charge, allowing visitors to explore the spaces of this old building that was once the Jesuit College, the residence of the Captain-General of the Azores, the headquarters of the Civil Government and today houses the Presidency of the Government of the Azores on the island of Terceira.

All these activities are free of charge and do not require prior registration.

For more information, those interested should contact the Presidency of the Government of the Azores on 296 301 000 or by email at [email protected].

The International Day for Monuments and Sites was established on April 18, 1982, by ICOMOS and approved by UNESCO the following year. Since then, this date has provided an opportunity to raise public awareness of the diversity of heritage and the efforts needed to protect and conserve it, while also drawing attention to its vulnerability.

Representing an annual celebration of heritage diversity, April 18 intends to be a milestone in celebrating national cultural heritage and international solidarity in safeguarding and enhancing cultural heritage around the world.
