The Vice-Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores promotes an international conference on "Portugal is the Azores - the USA and the Azores in the Cold War (1945-1965)" next Monday, April 22, at the Recreio Lajense Society in Vila das Lajes at 6 pm.

Tácito Rolim, PhD in History from the Fluminense Federal University and Associate Professor at the State University of Ceará (UECE), will be the keynote speaker at the conference. He will address the geostrategic position of the Azores and the relevance of the Lajes Base during the Cold War period.

Coordinator of the History & Cold War Study Group at UECE and vice-coordinator of the National Professional Master's Degree in Physics Teaching, Tácito Rolim has recently completed his post-doctoral research at the University of Porto (2023/24). He is the author of the book "The World in the Atomic Age: Brazil and the War (1945-60)."

This event takes place as part of the project to create the Lajes Base Interpretation Centre, which is being developed by the Vice-Presidency of the Government, in collaboration with the Historical Institute of Terceira Island.

With a view to defining the scientific content of the future Interpretation Centre, this initiative also aims to involve the local community and institutions. Other events of this kind will be held in the coming months to continue the effort to consolidate the Centre's thematic areas.

The conference will be opened by the Vice-President of the Government, Artur Lima.

Admission is open to the general public.

On November 13, 2023, a cooperation protocol was signed with the Historical Institute of Terceira Island to implement a study and work plan for the creation of the Lajes Base Interpretation Centre, which is being coordinated by Armando Mendes, a journalist and PhD in History, Defence and International Relations.
