The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, has already signed the works contract for the construction of the Algar do Carvão Environmental Interpretation Centre on Terceira Island.

Awarded to the company Marques SA, this work represents an investment of 2.6 million Euros and has a maximum completion period of 540 days.

This works contract follows a public tender promoted by the Regional Secretariat for Infrastructures in close collaboration with the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change.

The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, recalls that the project involves the expansion of the current facilities into a multidisciplinary building of about 1,000 square metres, including a temporary exhibition area, toilets, a pantry, a ticket office, a permanent exhibition area, an auditorium, a shop, a cafeteria, storage and outdoor areas.

"The new building is conceptually intended to emphasise the idea of a lava tunnel, with its interior being a succession of tunnels and a roof with beams at different heights to simulate stalactites," she said.

The Algar do Carvão is a natural monument covering 39.34 hectares, located in the parish of Porto Judeu, Angra do Heroísmo, and is currently one of the most visited places on Terceira Island by tourists and locals alike.
