The Azores Regional Wine Commission (CVR Açores), through the Regional Directorate for Agriculture, is holding the latest edition of the "Precision farming: from concept to practice" workshop on the island of Santa Maria this Thursday, November 9, as part of the Santa Maria Wine Fest programme.

As was the case with Terceira and Pico, the event, which will take place at the Agromariense Cooperative auditorium, will focus on the development and implementation of viticulture technology and the strategies deemed fundamental to innovation in the sector and adaptation to climate change.

Guest speakers include José Silvestre, assistant researcher at the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research (INIAV), whose field of expertise is vine ecophysiology, and Cátia Pinto, Executive Director of the SFCOLAB Association (Smart Farm Colab), a Collaborative Laboratory for Digital Innovation in Agriculture.

The initiative falls within the Farmers' Training Programme for the Sustainable Performance of Farms, as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

According to the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, António Ventura, there has been "a wide and diverse range of training programmes aimed at transferring knowledge and information with a view to training and advising agricultural producers and workers in the main regional agricultural sectors."

These actions have focused on the specific nature of agricultural production on each island in the context of the efficient and sustainable management of farms with respect to economics, society, the environment, climate, animal welfare, public health and the efficient use of resources," said the government official. In this regard, he pointed out that "a number of external actions are also planned until the end of the year, both for producers and for the technicians who support production."

Registrations for this workshop can be made using the form available at https://e-form.azores.gov.pt/formulario/421 or at the Agromariense Cooperative.

The Programme for Training Farmers and Promoting Literacy in Sustainable Production and Consumption is a measure of the Economic Recovery of Azorean Agriculture, under the RRP, with a focus on promoting economic convergence and the resilience of economies. It helps to ensure long-term sustainable growth and to respond to the challenges of the dual transition to a greener and more digital society.
