The Regional Undersecretary for the Presidency, Pedro de Faria e Castro, emphasised last Monday in Ponta Delgada the importance of a true "Europe of the regions."

Faria e Castro spoke at the reception to welcome the participants in the Eurodyssey 2023 Forum, which is taking place this week on the island of São Miguel with the participation of about a hundred representatives from 20 regions. On the occasion, he stated that this meeting "clearly represents" what the Azores defend in their daily work with international institutions: "a Europe of the regions."

"We believe that the particularities of each of them is what makes it possible to enhance this project based on mobility as well as on the development of personal and professional skills. It is particularly focused on young people, who are shaping the world of today and tomorrow," said the Regional Under Secretary.

For Faria e Castro, the fact that this event is being held in the Azores is "a challenge" for the Assembly of European Regions (AER), which is of "particular importance" considering that the archipelago is an outermost region with its own constraints. In this regard, he emphasised that this "is not synonymous with isolation" and that it also contributes to " the affirmation of Europe in the international system."

"We believe that major decisions will be taken and that the discussion of matters such as youth mobility and the creation of opportunities to enrich their academic and professional careers will bear fruit in this European Year of Skills," the Under Secretary said, challenging participants to be "ambassadors for the Azores" in their regions.
