Secretaria Regional da Saúde e Desporto
The Regional Secretariat for Health and Sport, through the Regional Directorate for Sport, is organising and promoting a training course entitled "Children's Games and Motor Skills," which will be taught by Professor Carlos Neto on the island of Terceira on May 11, as part of the "From Zero to the Olympic Games" programme.
It will be held at the Tomás de Borba Secondary School in Angra do Heroísmo. The practical component will take place at the pavilion of this educational establishment from 5 pm to 6 pm and the theoretical component will take place at the auditorium from 6:15 pm to 9.15 pm, corresponding to a total of four hours.
This initiative is part of the vision of the Regional Directorate for Sport regarding the development of its strategic plan for young people, this time for children aged three to five, as part of the context of the "Schools of Motor Skills."
This is an action open to the public in general, being particularly important and fundamental for all coaches, teachers and preschool teachers.
This training is accredited with 0.8 credits by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth - IPDJ, exclusively for sport coaches, while the other participants will be entitled to a certificate of participation.
All those interested can register online via the link Formação Contínua - Direção Regional do Desporto - Portal (azores.gov.pt), also available on the social media of the Regional Directorate for Sport, until May 8.
Carlos Neto is a specialist in human motor skills, more specifically in games and their importance for children. He is a full professor at the Faculty of Human Motor Skills of the University of Lisbon and the author of the renowned book "Libertem as Crianças" (Free the Children).
The "From Zero to the Olympic Games" programme aims to promote early motor stimulation to provide tools and conditions so that children can, from an early age, live and experience situations that make them more capable, independent, predisposed and developed from a motor and emotional standpoint.
It also aims to create conditions so that children and young people can have harmonious development, according to their maturity.
Ensuring a motor, social and emotionally competent population of children and adolescents, based on a wide range of experiences that are being integrated in a consistent manner, is another goal of this initiative.
The programme also aims to promote athletes with motor resources of excellence, complemented by rich and vast sporting experiences. Likewise, it intends to create conditions for the emergence of a growing number of athletes with sporting performances of excellence, both nationally and internationally.
It is divided into six projects: From zero to three - Early Motor Stimulation; from three to six - Schools of Motor Skills; from six to 10 - Sports Schools; from eight to 18 - ATCEF - Training and Competition Activities for the Training Levels, High Performance - TOPO and the ACTIVE AZORES Programme - regional sports programme for all.
