The Azores are highlighted as a "green tourism" and sustainability destination in the January/February 2023 issue of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, projecting themselves as a "guilt-free" choice for travellers who are increasingly concerned about the environment.

"It is a great pride to see this international recognition of the tourism quality and sustainability of the Azores - we are, indeed, a destination of choice," stressed Berta Cabral, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures.

The magazine highlighted good practices that make the Azores a sustainable destination on land and at sea, namely the classification of 25% of the land area as protected areas, the preservation of marine parks, and the fact that almost half of the energy produced in the Region comes from renewable sources.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, entrepreneurs are pursuing this goal, with a more sustainable tourism offer that makes the Azores a place with unique, engaging and valuable experiences.

"We know that this reference by Condé Nast Traveler was the result of a visit by a journalist to the Azores and her close interaction with DMO Azores - the Management Structure for the Sustainability of the Azores Destination, demonstrating the effectiveness of the tourism promotion work that has been done," continued Berta Cabral.

The magazine also highlights the fact that the Autonomous Region of the Azores is the first and only archipelago in the world to be formally certified as a "Sustainable Tourism Destination."

Condé Nast Traveler is the UK's best-selling monthly magazine dedicated to luxury travel and independent and sophisticated travelers, highlighting the best travel experiences in the world.
